The Connecticut Trauma Initiative
Connecticut's Trauma Initiative is a collaboration
of the Connecticut Women's Consortium, Connecticut Department of Mental
Health and Addiction Services and The University of Connecticut and Yale
University's "Center for Trauma Response/Recovery and Preparedness"
(CTRP)
A guiding principle of the Connecticut Trauma
Initiative is that people who have survived trauma, in particular interpersonal
trauma can and do recover when provided services that are sensitive to
their special needs. The purpose of this website is to keep the behavioral
community, survivors and other interested persons informed about current
efforts to address trauma as a public health issue in the state of Connecticut.
An Expert's Definition
of Trauma
"Trauma is a real or perceived threat to
the survival of an individual, a support system, or a larger community
or culture. Trauma leads to changes in the brain, nervous system, and
related areas of the body that are essential to survival but potentially
detrimental to ongoing self and spiritual development, engagement in relationships,
and productive involvement in learning and work."
Julian Ford, a psychologist at the University of Connecticut
Health Center and
one of the expert consultants to the CT Trauma Initiative
